The first trailer for the sequel to the 2006 epic, 300, has been released.

Based on the Frank Miller graphic novel, Xerxes, the plot will expand on the Battle of Thermopylae from 300 and explore the Rodrigo Santoro's character as he evolves from King to God.

Director Noam Murro told MTV, "The idea of this movie was always that it takes place at about the same time of the first one.

“It's as if you zoomed out and saw a bigger time frame and told a bigger story of what happened in 300. The first movie speaks to the detail of this sequel.”

Directed by Noam Murro, the film will star Eva Green, Rodrigo Santoro, Lena Headey and Sullivan Stapleton.

300: Rise of an Empire is due to be released in March 2014.
